The Mystery of Lincoln Trust
I posted last month about an annoying and misrepresentative email I received from a Tony Stephens at Lincoln Trust Insurance of Boca Raton, FL. I was looking at my Google Webmaster data just now and noticed that "561-204-3130" (the phone number the Lincoln Trust rep sent me) is listed as my #2 search query click. But search on that number in Google now and this blog, mysteriously, is no longer listed among the results.
There are only 2 results. Interestingly, 1 of them is a job listing posted by Joe Goldberg, Vice President of Lincoln Trust, on jobvertise.com. Click on the link and the listing is now gone. The Google cache, however, is not. Click on that and this is what you'll find:
Yeah, great career opportunity. A tech school graduate working full-time from home. A real top-notch organization you must be running there, Joe. And why exactly was an insurance company offering to find me client referrals in the first place?

somebody's been googling himself
Posted this little tale a few days ago. Today I got an email:

Dear Sir,
Apparently, you have chosen to cause damage to our company with your comments on a web site known as The Shit List.
My company sent you an email and perhaps it was an error, at this time I do not know how it may have happened, I only know that it did.
If this email was objectionable you merely needed to contact me and I would have taken efforts to have made sure it never would have happened again.
Regardless, our company name is now being damaged by your comments that appear on this unflattering web site. I am contacting you to ask respectfully that this be immediately removed so that it no longer appears in a Google Search.
Once again, I respectfully await your reply in the hope that this matter can be handled amicably between us.

Initially Tony Stephens cold called me offering to refer new clients to me. I brushed him off, figuring his time would be better spent suckering in the next rube on his call list.
Apparently, what I took for a one-off annoying phone soliciation was actually the start of a dynamic new business partnership. This morning he sent me the following email:

Yeah, I eagerly await your call.
The application requests a check for $195. I didn't bother to open the letter.
